Description |
A rounded rectangular, whole grinding stone platform with a depression, also known as a basin metate. The material is granitic (tonalite) including muscovite mica. There are areas of red and cream colored weathering. The white discoloration on one side may be lichen; it does not rub off. It is coarse grained. It has a central basin that was formed by rotary grinding movements typically with a hand-held grinding stone, called a mano. This grinding or milling stone's ventral platform forms a polished depression, the basin, and is 13 inches (38 cm) long, 8 inches (20.5 cm) wide and 1 1/2 inches (3.8 cm) deep. Construction of the stone created a roughly shaped ovoid surface. The dorsal side of the stone is curved with a rounded bumpy base that has small red circular areas of weathering. Dimensions: Length - 19.291", Width - 12.834", Height - 6.574", Weight - 75 lbs. |
